embodied memories

Jennifer Anyan:
Embodied Memories
January – February 2012
Old Tourist Information Centre, Civic Centre Road
Southampton City Centre

Embodied Memories brings the Gallery programme to the heart of Southampton city centre. The exhibition showcases startling new artworks by Jennifer Anyan, developed from verbal recollections of garments and items purchased from Southampton's old Tyrrell & Green department store. The exhibits, poised between sculpture and couture, are made to be worn and reflect Anyan's practice as both fashion stylist and artist.
Through Anyan's subtle reinventions– touching, at times humorous but always respectful – Embodied Memories playfully explores the gaps between memory, communication and interpretation. Also included in the exhibition will be a glamorous photo-shoot series and individual sound recordings of the collected memories, alongside a new, fully-illustrated publication.
The springboard for this commission has been Southampton City Council's plans to transform the old Tyrrell & Green site into Southampton's new arts complex, including the John Hansard Gallery's long-awaited city centre space. This exhibition and publication provide a chance to connect the past with the future.
